The English choral conductor and organist, Murray Forbes Somerville, was born in London and raised in Rhodesia. He studied under Karl Richter in Munich, Germany, at Oxford University (where he was Organ Scholar of New College, under Sir David Lumsden), under Robert Baker at the School of Sacred Music at Union Theological Seminary in New York, and with William Porter at New England Conservatory.

Organ Recital Series: James D. Hicks

James HicksJames D. Hicks, Concert Organist and Scandinavian Music Specialist, Morristown, New Jersey

James D. Hicks has appeared as a concert organist throughout the United States, Europe, and Australia. He is a native of Fredericksburg, VA. He holds degrees in music from the Peabody Institute of Music of Johns Hopkins University, Yale University, and the University of Cincinnati. Other studies of his include courses at the Royal School of Church Music in England. He is an Associate of the American Guild of Organists.
In recent years, he has made two organ recordings on the Pro Organo label. The first, American Classic Fantastic, was recorded at the Presbyterian Church in Morristown. An official student organization of Harvard College, Harvard students form the core of the Society’s membership, yet many friends from the wider community play a vital role in the Society’s activities. Among other activities—such as sponsoring Harvard's famous midnight Halloween concert—the Society organizes visits to notable instruments throughout the Boston area and wider New England. In Fall 2013, its members performed in several concerts on campus and in Boston, sharing their love of organ music with the wider community. Both performances are free and open to the public.
