Matthew Ichihashi Potts M.Div. '08 Ph.D. '13 was appointed the Pusey Minister in the Memorial Church and the Plummer Professor of Christian Morals in 2021. Prior to his appointment, Matt served as Associate Professor of Religion and Literature and of Ministry Studies at Harvard Divinity School, where he also received tenure and promotion to full Professor in 2021. He is the author of two books, Cormac McCarthy and the Signs of Sacrament: Literature, Theology, and the Moral of Stories (Bloomsbury, 2015) and Forgiveness: An Alternative Account (Yale University Press, forthcoming). He has also published scholarly essays in several leading journals, and is the co-host of the popular podcast Harry Potter and the Sacred Text.

Matt earned his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame, and both his M.Div. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard. He served as both an officer in the United States Navy and as a college administrator before being ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church. He has since ministered to several parishes in Massachusetts. Matt is originally from Michigan and now lives on the University campus in Sparks House with his wife Colette, their three children, and a whoodle named Suki.
