Dear Jeffrey,
We are broken-hearted at the white supremacist murders of ten Black people in a Buffalo grocery store Saturday. We are horrified at this terrorist attack upon an American community. And we are outraged at how racist hatred both pervades our political discourse and motivates ruthless violence.
Jesus has called us to repentance and to justice, and this call remains as urgent and necessary as it ever was. We at the Memorial Church pray this call will echo from our walls, and ever more loudly. We commit ourselves to this work.
Jesus also wept, and we know many of you are weeping now. If you need space to mourn, grieve, or lament before God, Appleton Chapel will be open for silent prayer, reflection, and remembrance of the victims of this shooting tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with staff also available for support.
We ask that you join us in our grief tomorrow, and join us in our work in the days to come.
Yours faithfully,
Matthew I. Potts Ph.D '13
